I want to find out who put the site online.

hm... On the internet, authors and others sources are not that commonly cited. If you want article that have its author, sources, etc., you should prefer looking at websites that are big and popular like wikipidia, CNN...those things...
I'm not saying that other small websites don't cite their sources. It is just uncommon.

Go to some open area on the site, and right click your mouse. The menu showing will have a VIEW SOURCE that you can open with notepad. Then skim through the html for the site. You should be able to find what you are looking for.

You can try to do a WHOIS search.
http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

This may or may not give you the exact information you want, but if the website doesn't have the author or owner somewhere on it, this will be the best you can do.

Somewhat do a who is search for domain name..

Type in dot com or net ETC

example.com
no www.
