as far as performance, Dsl is know for having slower connection speed when your farther away from the box because those cables are longer than 180 meters. Cable internet has a lot more repeater boxes that boost the signal way before 180 and so there is less lag. If your talking about an ether net connection in you house less than 120 meters shouldn't affect performance

If you ran it across the street or two houses away. The cables are not meant to convey the signal over long distances, and yes, that would not only affect the speed, but the quality of the signal.

Yes, Cat5 and Cat6 Ethernet cable is limited to about 800 feet, if memory serves.
