My problem is that the backyard is only about 30/20ft. and half of it is wood decking. The other half is wood chips and mud and I have 3 small dogs and if it rains at all thier small paws go through the wood chips and get very muddy. To compound the problem my back door is off of my bedroom so the minute I let them in they jump on my bed w/ muddy paws and track the mud all over my small 700sq ft. living space. So, what I would like to know w/ out wasting more money on solutions that have proved to not be helpful is how can I create a MUDLESS backyard? Something besides grass becasue that hasn't worked and I don't want astro turf either - any suggestions besides getting rid of my lovely dogs?

cover the ground with a garden mesh (meant to deter weeds) and then a thick layer of wood chips, the mesh will allow water to get to the ground while keeping the mud down

Nope, mud and woodchips is not a dog friendly back yard, I dont understand why grass would be a big deal since it would only be about a 15 sq ft area. As long as you have dirt exposed, mud will occur. You also have to have something that the doggies can do their business and grass is the only thing I think would work. I know it's not the answer you are looking for but I dont think anyone will have a magical ground covering that you haven't thought of that would work out perfect for you.

Why not try training your small dogs to use a litter box? You can research them on the net, but I've seen them at the groomer I take my dogs to. (I'm guessing that you meant how to fix your yard for this purpose). If you just meant for the dogs to play outside, then I agree with another poster who suggested pavers. You can buy the pavers and either use the existing woodchips in between them, or you can go to a local nursery and buy some "walk on" moss, grass or herbs to plant between the pavers. The benefit of the herbs is how nice they smell!

My backyard is smaller, and I have a border collie. Plus my parents room is right off the yard. Go to Lows or Home Depo and see what they have to say. I don't really think that you can do any thing except not to let the dogs out or if you have too take them inside one at a time and dry ther paws off with a towel! Sorry!

Plant a clover lawn!! Look up Clover Lawn" on the Internet. There are dozens of articles about the benefits of having a clover lawn. It is hardy, resistant to dog urine, self fertilizes, and is good for the planet. It mows just like a regular lawn and has little white flowers that can be mowed and they come back from time to time. I have seeded my existing lawn with clover and it is great! I'm in SoCal so things grow well here, but according to the articles it can grow most anywhere. Some URLs about clover lawns that I have bookmarked include: landscaping.about.com/cs/lawns/clover_lawns_4.htm, holisticbirds.com/HBN01/june/pages/clover1.htm, and wikihow.com/Grow-a-Clover-Lawn. Hope this helps!

It sounds like you just don't have enough woodchips down. Buy a bunch and put a couple more layers on the ground.
