It could take a little as a day or a week. It depends on how quickly the employer does it. Most of the reports they check are usually gotten the same day over the internet...police report, credit check,,,things like that.

Provided the party who is trying to do the background check has all of the required information, and there are no issues preventing them from pulling some of that information (i.e. fraud alerts on your credit profile), the check should be relatively easy to perform. However, if there are any alerts on your file, that will delay the check until you are reached to confirm your intent to release the information to a third party.
