I just got my new pc and have heard that you should shut down during a thunder and lightning storm. Isn't that what a serge protecter is for?

Surge protectors do help but can only withstand so much of a spike in electricty. It is ALWAYS best to shut down AND disconntect the power cord from the power source during a thunder and lightening storm. Not only should you shut your system down for these, your system should be shut down after you've finished with it for any extended period of time. It helps to maintain the integrity of your hard drive by allowing it to refresh itself.

turning it off during a storm wont stop anything from destroying your pc but unplugging it will no surge protector will stop lightning just leave it plugged in you will be fine if not allot more than your computer will go my parents house was hit by lightning about 6 months ago the computer was plugged into a surge protector and still got fried along with every electronic and LCD tv in the house but Homeowners Insurance covered it and they even got some upgrades

Yes! but storms cause power to go out and if you don't shut your computer down before hand you could still loose all memory. Computers need to be turned off properly to keep everything you want it to remember. You may not loose internet memory, but personal things you have put in can be easily erased.

Yes ideally but you should still shut your computer when there is storm or thunder or lighting.Just incase the surge protector brakes down

If you are concerned about power conditions I would suggest an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with line conditioning. This is basically an advanced surge protector that has its own battey. This type of device protects against power failure, voltage sag, voltage spike, under-voltage (brownout), over-voltage, line noise, harmonic distortion and frequency variation.
