The essays that got me in were very individual to my character, and that's what they liked about it. I never wrote good essays, it was just the personal nature of the letter that they knew I was sincere.
The sample ones I've seen totally suck, because they're badly written and just say "I'm the best student ever because" and the guy is like valedictorian and class president. Thankfully I never read any of them until after I was in college, if I tried to follow them I'd have never have gotten in.
The first time I told the story of my campaign for student office, and basically saw the funny side of life. That got me into a summer school at an Ivy League program, I was really just making fun of them because I thought I had no chance but they liked it.
The second time I wrote something really lame about Arizona being my home. Again, got me accepted, but I dropped out.
The third time I said how I just wanted to go there because my girlfriend was there and I liked Welsh culture. I can't believe that one got me in, it really sucked, and I don't think they even read it (that was a UK university, I think they're more desperate for students here).
In teacher training I mentioned my experience teaching voluntary things like Sunday school in church and kids at summer camp. What got me in that time is calling and making sure they had my papers (I think). They didn't even look at my cv or interview me until after I started the course.

I wish I could help you, but it seems a technological miracle, I can find any educational (Free) websites of any kind.
