As an Englishman it has always amazed me how the USA take credit for WW2.
To the best of my knowledge the USA didnt take part for 2 years whilst britain stood alone.
Why is it that Americans stood and let it happen, whilst lining their own pockets

Have you been drinking? Some of your points have merit.

We did not get involoved militarily and instead got paid by supplying the UK and other nations military aid. But that's just the way this country works. Get paid first. Look no further than Iraq.

However, if we had not gotten involved in the European theatre in 1942 the UK would have certainly fallen to Hitlers Third Riech. They could have easily placed a blockade in the shipping lanes, kept right on bombing London and other cities.

Please also factor in there were MILLIONS of people out of work in the U.S. We were suffering from a severe economic issues. On the flip side, there was also a great number of greedy people here that DID NOT want to help.

As soon as the people in power figured out there was money to be made, they were up for it. The Japanesee attack on Pearl Harbor put the U.S populace in to a mind set of Kill, Kill, Kill! Even the oppressed blacks got mad! At that time, blacks in the U.S. were being treated like cattle in many places, yet felt a sense of patriotism.

Were we cowards? No way! Were those that had power and wealth greedy? Absolutely! Did the Nazi's get their bumm's pushed right back across the channel and back up the Rhine because of U.S help? No question. Did the greedy U.S put the gangster on the U.K and make her pay us back for all the stuff we gave her? Of course, we are talking about the United States of capitalism and pimping.

Some of these other answers are disgusting. You ask a legitimate question, deserving of a legitimate answer.

Wars are never popular. Take a look at modern times- Iraq never directly hit America, and even though this is a noble war to eradicate remains of a genocidal dictator, the country still hates our participation. It would have been just as bad back in the 1930s and 40s, and our leadership would have taken serious political flak. So, they did the best that they could, sending Britain and France enough supplies and cash to stay in the war. Finally, it took an unforgivable strike against Pearl Harbor to wake up all of the Joe Americans, and we wasted no time sacrificing our men on the front lines of the beaches (think D-Day) to liberate overseas countries, and eliminate our attackers, Japan.

Nobody is trying to diminish Britain's role in WW2. Churchill is my favorite politician of the 20th century for a reason. We don't want ALL of the credit, but keep in mind that it was only through our supplies that Britain stayed in the war so long. (Nazis were cutting off all the other sources.) Then, keep in mind, that once America entered the war, we kicked butt, liberated an entire continent, and then North Africa and Eastern Asia, and pretty much purged the world of evil.

I do feel that england is underrated for World War 2 you guys held your own against the germans for a long time and did not give in so England I as a American Salute you.

America takes credit for world war 2 alot because of,
1. The lufwaffe were stopped dead in their tracks had America not ever joined i think you guys would have not been able to hold out much longer.
2. The stopping of the Weirmacht (Think thats how it is spelled)
3. Midway,Iwo Jima, ect.
4. (unfortunately) the detonation of the first nuclear weapon on Japan.
5. That is mainly when the war turned even though i think the germans may have eventually been stopped Because of their disastrous invasion of Russia and eventually would have been beaten back, but who knows?

First off, you've never been amazed by anything. To be "amazed" at something requires some sort of thought process which elicits some sort of a emotion. A skill that unfortunately, you don't have.

Second off, I find the notion that you feel that the US takes full credit for WW2 as hillarious as the notion that you "stood alone" for two years. Pick up a history book (book, you know, those paper things with words in them. Better get one with small words and lots of pictures), have someone read it to you, and then if you can comprehend any of it, perhaps you'll come away a little wiser.

And maybe pigs will fly out of my butt one day too.

Good luck with that homework assignment. I'm sure you'll do fine.

First of all, England for many years, "stood and let it happen", e.g. let Hitler run amok and build up a huge military machine, and buried its head in the sand until Hitler became an imminent threat to England itself.

Second, in the late 30's there was much American resentment against being inveigled into the first world war, which was essentially started by the hackneyed political intrigues of treacherous and malevolent european leaders.

Finally, the war could not have been won without American involvement. Even if England and Russia had been able to fight Hitler to a stalemate, it is extremely unlikely they could have militarily (or would have had the political will) to dislodge him from Western Europe. And who would've beaten back Japan?

As far as "taking all of the credit for WW2", your statement is just a primitive assertion that this is somehow a prevailing American view.

Oh please. It has long been acknowledged by other Allied countries that our entry into WW II turned the tide in Europe, but nice try. We had an isolationist policy at the time, and you already know that policy changed after Pearl Harbor. Cowardly? Give me a break. You need to brush up on history and read about D-Day. How much courage would you have had if you knew you were going to die on that beach because you were going to be one of the first to hit the beach? They were so sure of death that many soldiers were tossing their cookies before they stormed that beach - yet they went anyway. So take your charges of cowardice and shove them where the sun doesn't shine. You'd be speaking German right now if it weren't for the Americans.

Your childish insults to your answerers doesn't bolster your case, it just adds more evidence that you have no real ammunition for your case. I love the British, and I plan to visit next year. I'll remain confident that the majority of Brits are better educated and informed about WW II than you are. Hopefully I'll find that they have better manners, as well.

As you are fully aware, the US entered WW2 only after they were attacked at Pearl Harbor, and Japan declared war. Prior to that, the US considered WW2 to be a hemispheric issue. You also have no doubt that the UK would have been unable to defeat Germany/Italy/ and Japan, without the US, and would have been defeated by the Axis within months. America didnt "allow" anything to happen. Germany instigated the war, and were defeated.
Now, back to your history books.
And by the way to the other poster, WW2 was begun in 1941 from an american prospective. The same applies to WW1, where the war began in US chronology upon its involvement, not that of Europe.

I think you need to seperate the US government position and that of the US soldiers, airmen and navy boys, and were most only boys, who went and fought in places the vast majority of them had never heard of. Many of these boys hadn't been futher than their local town before. ALso there were US boys who joined the fight before the US entered after Pearl Harbour. Look at the Eagle squadrons. I think comments like the US were cowards or that the UK couldn't have won without the USA aren't helpful. Who knows, remember Russia bled the Germans dry, making a huge sacrife perhaps as many as 20 million men women and children.

Cowardly? Hardly, but there was no reason for use to intervene - nobody had committed an act of war against the US, nor had anybody declared war against us, and we were not in any alliances that would drag us into war.

Now, FDR, in his only intelligent action, supported Britain as much as possible, with the lend-lease act to give them much needed ships and arms, and with his actually committing acts of war on Britain's behalf by escorting British merchant ships with US navy vessels far into international waters.

But when we did enter the war, unready and unprepared, we were unstinting in our efforts.

Perhaps you should save your "cowardly" crapola for the Froggies, who gave up after 6 weeks and refused to carry on the fight.

But it sounds like you know very little of the actual history. Tis a pity - your previous generations knew how to be men.
