RAM provides and workspace. If you run large or multiple applications at the same time, you'll need the extra RAM. Technology standards have increased and are migrating away from a minimum of 512MB to 1GB. Get 2GB and you'll be ahead of the standards.

If you are considering Vista 2 GB is necessary. I don't know what software you use. Any thing like IDE or visual studio takes lot of RAM and you will need it. Office 2007 also takes a lot of RAM.
One more thing it's always good to get 2 exactly identical ram sticks. Even if same speed but different company will make your PC unpredictable. So in the future you think you will need more memory then get it now. Another option is stick to bigger company of RAM and you can get ram from same company later,

It depends what you plan to do with it.
If you plan to run Photoshop or otherwise perform heavy graphics work - then it will be useful.
Playing recent, graphically intensive games? Probably, but a chunky graphics card would probably be more useful.
Use MS Office, email and a web browser? Doubtful.
If in doubt, you can always start with 1G and upgrade later on.

That depends on how you want to use your system. If you need your system for office use, then 1GB RAM is fine. But if you want to play games and do things as photo/video editing, I'd reccomend 2GB of RAM.

If all you do is email and websurf, it wont help you much to upgrade, but if you play games, use graphics/video software, or tend to run alot of apps simultaneously, it will help a lot to upgrade.

Just keep in mind, when you run a program, it runs in memory. So if you want to run many programs at once, more is always better.
