The main goals of imperialism were to 1) secure natural resources (raw materials) to help with and sustain industrial growth for the parent country and 2) provide markets to sell the finished products made with the raw materials acquired. Everything else is secondary to the acquisition of wealth and resources.

It's very similar to how the Mafia works.

Everyone pays you tribute, gives you special tax breaks and trading privileges. And plenty of swag and gifts too.

Everyone kisses your butt and says your nation the greatest thing on Earth.

Everyone mimics your culture and abandons theirs.

Your vision of History; past, present and future is the only one that counts.

And what ever you do to maintain control over the rest of the world is automatically justified even if it's criminal, hypocritical or morally reprehensible.
