I was told that I am not black just because I didnt know what a "scrapple" was. I was at the cafe here at my job and was hungry this morning. I wanted a breakfast sandwich and didnt know what scrapple meant. well the the lady (she's black) taking to order said how could you not know what it means? its a black thing! i cannot tell you how offended i was. so I told her that she was racist. then some janitor(also black) came by who i assume was her friend and she went and told him. he said "its food for our people, aren't you black?". I cannot tell you how offended I am that because i dont know a particular food. im not black. This ignorance makes me so upset. what do you think?

Well gee, I guess I'm not black either because I have never heard of a scrapple. Ignore stupid ignorant people. The worst discrimination I've received from people of color (black and hispanics) is them saying I act white. I don't really care though. If being myself, being educated, carrying myself well, and having better taste in music, etc, is acting white then I can deal with it.

This is natural and the way the world works. The only reason why any business caters to people of different races is a legal one, they don't want to be sued by either a customer or employee. I worked in other parts of the world (SE Asia as a contract engineer) and racism within a race is common because it's usually viewed as someone forgetting about what hardship and identifiers made their race what it was. Anyone who tells you race is a construct is in denial, the reality is race is normal watch any school ground, work place, and gathering of people and they will automatically self-segregate themselves. It's a natural protective instinct which society tries to falsely destroy and ruin the greatness of. The stereotypes of a race is a characterized traits noticed by people based on observances and interactions, usually the ones who believe in the stereotypes the most are the people of that particular race.

I cannot speak for myself, but my wife has this happen incessantly (since she is a BF married to me, a WM). She has been told by a relative that she has "forgotten who you are," etc. People need to stop thinking that race (a phony concept in the first place) determines culture and behavior.

To Mad below: I am from south central PA as well (but live in Texas now), and am German in background, so I know exactly what you are saying!

To FORK T: Race is a construct, because there simply is no NON-ARBITRARY line of demarcation between the "races."

I think that's a good question, some blacks feed into the lies of society and start believing it as true. Truly, a loss of self -identity. But what is being black these days anyways,,,,Caribbean, multiracial, middle class, urban black folks,ETC, its so diverse, so people get ethnicity confused with race

As for your example I dont think it was racist. Every culture has pacific traditions, some blacks get amazed by people of their own race not knowing about these traditions, like any other race would.....i see it as if your coming from the south your naturally going to know what grits are, but u go up north people will look at you like your crazy for asking for it....what are u going to call them, bigots for thinking grits are weild..no i dont think so.

It's not just blacks...every ethnic groups seems to do that to some extent.

Everyone in my area thinks I'm strange because I don't like cabbage...coleslaw, sauerkraut, you name it. I live in central PA, so there's a lot of people of German descent...I'm considered a bad German, but they're just joking around (usually). We also have plenty of scrapple. I don't like it, but it smells good.
