My son thinks gangs, and living in the hood, etc is so exciting, it's the music and the movies he watches, and his friends, I want to show him the dark side of it all, we live in a small town in the country, and so he has no idea what really happens.

we have a very stable life, the problem is, that music(on the radio)and movies(on tv)do glorify all of this and young kids find it facinating, I just wanted to show him what it is like for real.

If there is a large city with a Prison or County Jail call and talk to the jailer or Sheriff and ask about your son visiting supervised with convicts who are in prison for that reason. Many gang members end up in prison or dead and it's no joke. As a Minister I see this as a serious problem in many communities. We need to teach our youth that violence and sex as seen on TV is just that actors playing a part, however the way they glorify it on tv has caused many of our youth to go astray. I would also recommend getting a copy of a DVD, The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson. This is a great example on what can happen with gangs and why it's important for our young people to be taught who God is and what it really means to be a christian in today's world.

Okay you are being a good mother by being concerned about a serious epidemic that is facing our youth. You should absolutely give him a documentary and even talk to his school because probably his peers have influenced his thought.

You should even research on this subject, find thugs and gang members that have died for their gang explain to him that the exaggerated lifestlye is only a fantasy and marketing method.

The documentary is the best way unless you want a real gang member pulling him into a world of drugs and gang fighting

the grid iron gang is a great movie that was released recently. it is a true story about boys in juvenile detention centers that eventually come together to play football against other high schools, but there is violence and true attitudes of gangs---great movie.

also try gang wars or gang wars2. i havent seen them but if you look up the content of the film is sounds like what you are looking for.

go to your local video rental and ask them for a true movie/documentary on the real life of gangs and what happens to them

you may also want to try calling a juvenile detention center or jail and see if you can bring your son and his friends in to talk to the police/guards and see what it is really like.

And why would you allow him to listen to and watch those movies with his friends? He needs new friends. Does he have a stable family life, with a father that can show him how to grow up into a man?

HBO made a documentary several years ago about that lifestyle and how it has migrated to rural communities-I may be thinking of two seperate movies but I'm sure HBO made both of them. I wish I could remember the names but you may be able to research it and find them.
