If you are referring to the use of grills on decks or patios then yes, they can do that. There is nothing illegal about it. Grills are generally not permitted within 10 feet of a multi-family structure. You shoudl consider yourself fortunate they let you use them at all.

You're joking right? You want to know the legalities of a grill?

Okay here is the legality - not being allowed to own a charcoal grill is not illegal, an infringment on your rights, nor is it grounds for a lawsuit about your civil liberties. Likely, if there are charcoal pits available in the complex they are away from living structures and pose no threat to the buildings and/or their inhabitants, where as a personal charcoal grill close a building would.

Buck up and buy a gas grill, or if they intend to leave the community charcoal grills in the open areas available and you cannot live without charcoal and lighter fluid on your food you will have to hike out there to make your weiners.

The complex has the right to protect it's property and a duty to see to the safety of all it's residents.

Who is management? I'm assuming you are referring to where you live. If "management" is the equivalent of your landlord or homeowners association, then they have the right since they either own the place, or in the case of the HOA, have the right to institute changes for the good of the community as granted to them in your CC&R's.

You might want to question how they plan to correct the charcoal BBQ's in the common areas to comply with the new rule.
