1st of all, i cant tell u how much u'll need but u can actually do an estimate if u spend time googlin the info up ureself.Coz only u will be able to choose the hotels/hostels that u wanna stay in, means of transport , countries u wanna cover while u backpack.U can either choose to use rails or budget flights.I'll give u a few links for u to refer to.But u must decide on which countries that interest u the most.Once u pick a country..lets say "France", check the bordering countries if u intend to interrail.U can stop by Amsterdam,Belgium,Germany...So choose a country..France has a lot to offer, infamous Eiffel Tower,Notra Dame,The Louvre Museum..etc.Then of coz Amterdam wid their "legal weed distract" lol and Germany..with its history.Just spend some time googlin up Europe. There must be a country that u have always wanted to visit. The next thing u do is look up prices on rails,if ure below 26yrs old u can get "student" discount.Or if u dun have enuf time , try budget flights. The once u got ur transport & countries sorted out.U can start looking for Hotels/hostels.They do have youth hostels that wud be cheaper. It all depends on how much ure willing to spend on accomodation.
Also, try to include Prague into ur list, its a beautiful country & the currency exchange is pretty good. They dont use Euro's yet so its pretty good . Beautiful city & amazing catheral. If u want beaches , sun & sea.U wud wanna head all the way down to Greece or Spain.Check the links below for more info.Good Luck & happy hunting!Cheers!

I totally agreee with the first post, but I would say buy Rick Steve's book. It was an invaluable resource for me and my bf. We travelled through Europe for two months last Sept-Nov. It is such an exciting experience and if you have the opportunity to do it I would not pass it up! I was surprised by how inexpensive the trip ended up being, but I do believe that it just depends on how expensive you make it.
We bought a two month unlimited travel rail pass which ran about 1,100 american dollars each. We got first class so it was a little more expensive, but I think it was worth it for some long overnight travel where we didnt pay for a sleeper because we had roomier seats. I would recommend buying the pass before you leave the states because it is cheaper that way. You have to be aware that sometimes you will have to pay reservation fees to ride some trains which can range for 10 euros each to 70 euros each depending on the route (ie Paris to Amsterdam is more expense than Madrid to Toledo). Once you pay for the rail pass your travel will be covered for the most part however. Once arriving in each city we found it was pretty easy to walk just about everywhere. In fact in two months we only used a taxi twice and that was in Paris (big city). Otherwise buses and trams are pretty cheap. Public transport in Europe is far superior than the transport in the US. Your plan ticket to Europe will vary depending on where you are flying from and to so I cant really give you an estimate, but that will be money spent before you leave.
As far as day to day cost on food it is what you make it. We had plenty of great lunches that we bought at a store or market for 5 or 6 euros. Meat, cheese, fruit and sometimes wine. We also spurlged on expensive meals once and awhile, just so we didnt get sick of eating so meagerly all the time.
Places to stay in Europe are so incredibly cheap in comparison to the US. I truly was shocked. Again, this varies by city and quality of accomadation, but you can stay in some places for as little as 15 euros/ night per person. Check out a site like hostelz.com just to get an idea.
You'll also need to think of cost of getting into attractions like museums and other sight seeing activities.
My best advice is to buy Rick Steves, save as much as you can, and GO!! You will be able to make it work if you have any sort of reasonable budget. ENJOY!!!

It depends on what country you're visiting. Being that most of Europe is on the Euro, it can be quite expensive. I would suggest getting a travel book. When I visited Europe, I got a travel book from Lonely Planet. They really do have the some of the best books for people traveling on a budget. They have recommendations for restaurants, hostels, hotels, nightlife, etc.

It depends a lot on which countries you'll be visiting and which standards of accommodation and food you are planning on. East-European countries are a lot cheaper than West-European countries. You can save a lot of money on accommodation by sleeping in hostels rather than hotels. As for food, it really depends on whether you want to eat out every night or just go for some fast food or groceries.
If you tell me which countries you have in mind I can try to give you a rough idea about prices.
