My friend is trying to get a divorce; however, she is in debt and needs financial help. She tried job and family services but they are saying that they cannot give financial aid until she has been separated for 6 months. Her husband is coming over to her apartment all the time and bothering her. He asks for money. He calls their kids and cries about needing money (to a 12 year old!). Yesterday he came up to our work and said he need her bank card or he was going to take her car and sell it. She is now hiding the car in her sister's garage. How is someone supposed to get help!?! She needs to get away from him and no one will help. She can't wait until August while he harrasses and threatens her. Does anyone have any helpful ideas?

Gypsy, how does putting an ad in the paper stating that she should not have to wait 6 months help? What did it do for you when you did it?

firsy of all tell her to go get a restraining order,or order of protection,so that he cannot just show up at her house and her job, that should help her get some help from family services.next thing to do is if she is at least 10,000 dollars in debt file for bankruptcy, also take an ad in the local paper for 30 days stating the date they seperated and that she is no longer responsible for any debt that he incures, also she can put an ad in the paper (that he will not see) stating that they have seperated and she should not have to wait 6 months to additional help,i had to do all this when i lived in lorain ohio

Step number one is to go to the 4th floor of the court house and get a protection order against him. I am assuming that nothing has been filed with the court. She can actually file for the divorce without an attorney. She can go to the domestic clerk and ask for the appropriate papers and affidavits to file. Once she files for the divorce (filing fee is $185.00) she will also file a motion for temporary orders-this prevents him from taking any money, selling any property, etc. It will also set child support temporarily until the hearing. Everytime he bothers her she needs to tell him she will call the police and press harrassment charges on him if he doesn't leave her alone. Then she needs to DO IT! I wish her lots of luck. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

If the car is in her name, he cannot sell it. She needs a restraining order to keep him away from her. The chance of her losing her job due to his visits there should be reason enough to obtain it. Threatening is also a reason.
