you can, but it doesn't do a lot of good.

Try feeding the disposal a tray of ice cubes. The shattered ice chips will grind stuff off the inside of the disposal without harming it.

There are also foaming pipe cleaning products you can try. (2-part drain cleaners)

The smell is food residue sticking to the inside of the disposal and the pipe coming our of the disposal and rotting in there. Pouring in bleach can kill the smell for a day, but it comes right back. You have to get the rotting food out of the disposal and pipe.

Greasy foods is the root cause of the sticking...

Baking soda is by far less harmful and will improve the odor. Though it is important to make sure there is not something stuck in the disposal giving off the odor.

Clorox is not the best choice, because it can splash back and burn your skin. If you have a septic tank, bleach will kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank, and the waste will not decompose properly.

Baking soda works well, and lots of people also use lemons. Cut a whole lemon in quarters and run it through, one piece at a time.

Good luck.

I wouldn't put clorox in it. Use salt and lemon juice. Pour it in, let it sit for a second and then run it. You can also pour coke in the drain to unclog it.

Ice to sharpen the blades and then lemon for freshness. It really works. I don't think the bleach will hurt the disposal but if it splashes back into your face it could hurt you.Be careful if you use it.

Too caustic. The advice about the lemon peel is the key, but a mixture of egg shell and lemon peel (a whole lemon) will help to clean it as well.
