It is worth getting, while you can do it without one you will end up with a tighter screen and a lot less frustration. The old saying the right tool for the job. A screwdriver is for driving screws.

I have done it with a butter type knife or other blunt object with success, but the roller sure make it easier. They are inexpensive and it's a good thing...if you use it twice in 5 years that would be a lot.

Nope; with care a flat edged screwdriver works just fine; just slower.
