I really haven't experienced the "rolling eyes" of the salesman. When I go to the hardware store, I'm usually in the middle of a project and look the part of a tool-chick.

I tend to like Lowe's better. Bought a sweet snowblower from them and the salesman was very patient with my questions. I'm a very hands-on person, so I was almost on the floor taking the engine apart. Same when I was researching a comp. miter saw.

I like Lowe's stock better. More available and can find things easier.
HD's aisles are crowded with displays and restock. Even with the directions from an associate, I'll be dipped if I can find anything in there.

I wish Lowe's were more conveniently located. Home Depot is much closer to me -- so, to my dismay, I go there more often.

One thing I can say for HD, just week, I found an nice strip of oak 1"x2"x4' under the saw -- not yet restocked in the "per foot" bin. They sold it to me as scrap. AND speaking of the scrap bin, that's saved me a ton for all the weird pieces I need. Our Lowe's doesn't have a scrap bin.

I read once in a business journal that Lowe's is trying to attract the female shopper, while Home Depot tries to cater to contractors. Thus the warmer, fuzzier nature of Lowe's advertising compared to Home Depot's.

I do think Home Depot has a greater diversity of products, however when looking for decorative items such as lighting fixtures, I tend to prefer Lowes.

I don't believe either is better than the other. Both stock many of the same brands so shop for the best price and delivery etc. At times Lowe's stock a certain brand that Home Depot does not carry and vice versa.
It is really a matter of choice and exactly what I am shopping for.

I thought Lowe's would have a better attitude because of their advertising, but they are both the same. If you're a woman, they roll their eyes at you and tell you that what you're asking for isn't what you want.

Case in point: I went to both stores asking for a clamp for my washing machine hose. Both told me there is no such thing. I went to the local Mom & Pop hardware and asked for the clamp, and it was handed to me with no discussion.
