my sister has one and it is very painful. it reuptures periodically and it causes her a lot of discomfort. her obgyn said that he won't remove it (i cannot remember the reason why, but he said that the risks outweigh the benefits in her case). it gets irritated when she's on her period too.
i think a woman runs a higher risk of having them if the females in her fam have instances of problems with their reproductive organs.
that's about all i know about it...

I have had ovarian and uterine cysts for several years. Most of them do not cause any problems at all but some however are extremely painful. There is medication that you could take that may help dissolve them (not sure of names, haven't tried them). There is a procedure called a Laporoscopy, exploratory through your naval that the Dr can go in to drain the irritating one(s). This is outpatient and quick recovery with minor pain, no visible scarring either.
I have had some rupture as well. This was extremely painful because the toxins can get into your system and cause illness and vomiting.
If they are not bothering you, I wouldn't worry about them. If they are, make sure you see your doctor. There is treatment available.
No offense to the one person who answered and I don't know her sister's med history, but I can't imagine why her sister's Dr says the benefit of all the pain she goes through outweighs the removal.

I had a corpus luteum cyst on one of my ovaries when I was pregnant with my first child. They're very common, nothing to worry about, and mine eventually ruptured (painlessly) and was reabsorbed into my body.

As for other cysts--I'm sorry, this is the only type I've ever had experience with!

i have one now! had a hysterectomy 6 weeks ago and he found it at my checkup, he said not to worry as most dissappear on their own and are a result of the follicle not being reabsorbed by the body after the egg is released, he will check in two months to make sure its gone
