Go to your local public library and look for "Consumer's Guide" and the April issue of "Consumer Reports".
Both have every statistic you could ever want about new cars, including estimated gas mileage and reliability.

some of the hybrids are pretty darn expensive.
so my vote is for the v.w. jetta tdi
affordable to buy, 50 miles to the gallon, diesel engine. yep, sometimes diesel fuel can cost a tad more than hi-test gasoline but the mileage is awesome, the car is very comfy, reasonably priced and resale is great!
we have one four years old - never a problem. this is our second one - we gave our son and daughter-in-law the original and bought a new one!
friends have an old one with over 100,000 miles on it - maintenance bills extremely low and its still running good! all
three of their sons used it for their first car and all three of their sons now drive v.w. - different models but we all swear by the vehicle!
good luck!

For a few more dollars you can get a prius. Very reliable and cheap to operate, also you get a tax credit for buying one so you if you figure the credit into the cost it's comes out to around $19,000

A HONDA Accord is a GREAT car. My sister is car shopping and I was listening to the things they were saying abouthe Accord; It has good gas mileage, reliable, safe, and I know HONDA is VERY good with working out pricing for you. My sister was looking into 'leasing to own'. It is a good price. Also, HONDA has a VERY good resale value. Good luck with whatever you chose!
