Go to a Costco or BJ's to pick up a 25 pack of microfiber towels. These absolutely do not scratch paint and is the choice of people in the know. You wash them in washing machine separately from other clothes as they pick up lint. Do not use fabric softener.

Read this article. In part 3, there is a picture under a microscope of the scratches that you get from cotton towels.

An old white Tee- Shirt (Haynes, Fruit of the Loom etc..etc.) works the best. Don't wax the car in direct sunlight either. I usually wait until after 3pm. Make sure you change the surface area that you are wiping, you'll see the dirt and wax residue build up on the rag. Otherwise, you're dragging the dirt across the paint and scratching it. Most people use a circular motion with the applicator, but I read an article recently in either Hot Rod or Car Craft, that this can cause swirl marks in the paint. The article recomended a back and forth motion. I haven't tried it yet myself, I was taught the circular motion method. As far as cleaning them afterwards, I put them in the washing machine like any other item of clothing.

Auto parts and discount stores have inexpensive " white terry cloth" towels. You will find these near car waxes and cleaning products. These stores also carry blue colored detail cloths which are somewhat more expensive.

To clean these towels, soak them in a pail of hot water with Wisk and a cap full of Clorox. Scrub them by hand and let them soak for a short period of time.

It's perfectly safe and OK to wash these cloths and towels in washing machines with normal Tide soap. Good luck to you.

I've had good luck with old baby diapers. You just don't see them too much anymore. So now I use old terry cloth towels and we wash them in the washing machine by themselves and they get clean. Good luck.
