I started feeding my daughter oatmeal at 3 1/2 months. At 4 months I started adding veggies to the oatmeal. Now she is 6 months and she is eating fruits (not bananas and apples as they can cause constipation along with rice cereal) oatmeal, and cheerios.

My daughter is 6 months and I just started her on baby food. I started the cereal at 3 months. This is my first child and I have been told so many different things. I have a friend that started giving her daughter baby food at 4 months. I guess it just depends on the child.

I have 3 children, ranging in ages from 5-18. It seems doc's are always changing the rules on this one. Typically they say you should start around 6 months, BUT I had some hungry babies. I usually started with cereal around 4 months. (except my daughter who had reflux and she had cereal earlier). I always started with really diluted (formula or breast milk) rice cereal. They say to wait weeks in between trying new things so if an allergy develops you know what to pinpoint. So I started with rice, then to oatmeal. At about 6 months, I started on simple veggies. Carrots and sweet potatoes. Good luck! The most important thing is to make sure they are swallowing so they don't choke. Although it takes some time. Patience is the most important.

I started with rice cereal at 4 months and then moved on to orange vegetables, then green, at 5 months. I proceeded through each vegetable a week at a time before moving on to the next to make sure there were no allergies. Then I could feed her vegetables in combination. I didn't start fruits until 6 months. I had been told once they taste fruit the veggies aren't so yummy. If you are breast feeding, you don't need to start until after 6 months if you aren't ready to deal with the mess (I thought it was fun). Also, it has been shown that starting feedings before 4 months can contribute to juvenile diabetes. I would check with your pediatrican's office for recommendations.

I started when my son started reaching for my food. This was around 7.5-8 months.

We skipped the messy purees and useless cereals and gave him soft table food from the start.

He is a perfect eater and will eat anything put in front on him! Its really an awesome way to transition into solids.

I tried starting my son on cereal when he was 4 months old, but he wasn't ready. So we waited until he was 5 months and it worked out fine. Every child is different.
