+Abra-hard to train until it evolves into Kadabra. Then trade it to another game and back, it'll be a psychic pokemom, one of the best psychic types.
+Magnemite-its a steal/electric type and easy to raise, one of the best electric types
+eevee evolutions-you can get Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon. After getting eevee then use either a fire, thunder or water stone.

well, you're going to want something to complement your starter's strengths and weaknesses...if you picked squirtle (as i did) you'll need good grass and fire types, like growlithe and oddish (unfortunately leafgreen gets the good grass type bellsprout, see if you can trade for it) obviously for different starters you would switch it up, an excellent water type is gyarados
to round out your team, good type choices would be a good electric type (raichu, magneton, electrode) a good psychic (alakazam has sorry stats, but can learn psychic fairly early, i actually chose jynx for its ice/psychic type) and a dragon if you can get one (the previously mentioned gyarados is good, but dragonite is better)
my team that i beat the elite four with was
1) dragonite
2) alakazam
3) jynx
4) golem
5) electrode
6) flareon
so i actually didn't use my starter, but in the early parts of the game it's expected until you find a better one of the right type
good luck

Abra, Dratini, Staryu.
All of these pokemon in their final forms are what I like to call "Wild Cards", that means they can use move types that aren't normally associated with their type. For example, all three can learn Thunder, which isn't normal for these guys.
You want to give your pokemon moves that can capitalize on all of your opponent's weaknesses. You want at least 1 "Wild Card" on every team, sometimes 2 or 3.
