I emailed my friend who wears a suit everyday to work and here's what he said:

"You can unsew them, but sometimes keeping them sewn helps the jacket maintain its shape. Pockets on especially cheaper jackets will tend to flop out and you don't want that. I have some suits that I haven't unsewn pockets just so everything looks solid, and you don't put anything in those pockets anyway."

What do you think?

Most dress clothes come this way. I'd say it really depends on wether or not you want to use the pockets. Will you want to use a pocket square? perhaps put a pen in the pocket?

You can always keep them sewn shut until you really need the pocket. Having them sewn closed does keep its shape and prevent the pocket lining from riding up.

I work for Lands' End a multi billion dollar clothing company. If you are going to use the pockets, snip the threads holding the pockets shut. If you are not intending to use the pockets leave them sewn. (This will help the pockets keep their shape in laundering and if your weight changes either loosening the Blazers fit or making it snugger.

You can leave them stitched, or un-stitch them...you don't actually have to un-sew, there is usually just a thin piece of string that will come apart easily with a razor blade.
If you aren't planning on using the pockets tho, I would leave them, as it helps keep the jacket pockets in place.

It's fine to cut the threads closing them - the pockets are there for a reason. Make sure you do it carefully and from the inside so as not to damage the fabric!

do whatever you want if you use your pockets a lot then unstitch them
i bought a coat with stitched pockets and didnt unstitch them until it was freezing cold at a football game and wanted to warm my hands, the coat has not lost its shape and the pockets look fine

they are swen shut so the blazer keeps its shape. If you don't really need to use them, don't unsew them. Your friend is right.

Keep the sewn shut, they were probably sewn shut for a reason.
