It depends on what you have time for and what you are looking to get as a result of owning a pet. If you don't have a lot of sparetime but would like to have a pet in your home I would suggest a cat since they kind of take care of themselves. A dog on the other hand is more interactive which can be good and can be bad. If you are looking for a pet that is going to be like having a kid then a dog is for you. A dog is a lot more work. They need to be walked, bathed frequently, talked to more, and need a lot of attention!! You also can leave a cat home alone if you are not going to be around much or if you are going away for the weekend. This cannot be done with a dog, they cannot be left for long periods of times and cannot be left alone over the weekend.

Cats get my vote-they are independent, you don't have to rush home to take them outside to use the bathroom. Intelligent creature that doesn't "need" you for the most part. An eccentric creature that can give you a laugh at its remarkable nature.
Dogs are annoying. The constant barking at anything that has a heartbeat. Constant training to get them to stop doing anything they are not supposed to. Not to mention the creature will crap or pi$$ wherever it feels like, thus in the event you have an indoor dog, be prepared for you domain to constantly be a full blown litter box. I'm sorry to dog owners, but I can't stand dogs. I've yet to live in any apartment where someone didn't have a mutt barking at all hours of the night.

dogs dogs and more dogs come on they love you unconditional they now when your upset and they try to cheer you up by giving you doggy kisses and a cat can't do that.
they make a good campanion when your running at the park
they are very loyal where as cats are lazy (from my experience im not saying that all cats are)

had a cat, now have a dog, my husband is allergic to cats, don't worry i gave my cat to a really close friend and I still get to see her.
