I was in NYC at Christmas time and I saw a lot of Japanese tourists. I also saw a lot of Middle Eastern tourists. I was wondering when Japan's vacation season is--e.g., Americans usually take vacations in the summer--and if anyone can tell me when Middle Eastern people take their vacations that will also be appreciated? Thank you.

Japanese are some of the most traveled people in the world. There are a lot of "traveling" seasons. As you stated, Summer is a big one. Most people want to get out of Japan to escape the heat if they can during summer time. Summer vacation starts in the middle of July until September.

Winter vacation starts around the middle of Dec. to the first week in Jan. Spring break is long for university students because Spring is when the school year ends here in Japan. Students finish school at the end of January to the beginning of Feb. and starts up again in Early April.

But for workers, they take vacations whenever they can, and they don't bat an eyelash at taking an overseas vacation for 3 days 5 nights. I know many people that have done so.

You can find Japanese tourists in virtually every country in the world that is accessible by Japanese. They really do love to travel.

Hope that helps.

Times when just about every Japanese have time off at the same time:

New Years starting around Dec 29 - Jan 4th/5th. Many go back to their hometowns.

Golden Week April 29th - May 5th.

Obon: mid-August this tends to vary as there are no set holidays for this but generally people take off about a week.

Throughout the year there a number of public holidays a few of them fixed to Monday giving people a three day weekend.

Many Japanese go abroad in June because the weather is rainy and humid.

most schools end at the end of March and start at the beginning of April, so that's when they have spring break (around 2 weeks). then there's summer break which starts from August to the first or second week of September, and finally winter vacation which is only about 2 weeks starting from the day before x-mas.
japan has a lot of national holidays, so that's probably why the breaks are so short.

Before the end of April, vacation season starts again.
If you see any tourists travelling and it is not the season. they must be there for a reason. tour or seminars or just a bunch of Japanese people who are members of organizations. There are millions, so they are everywhere in the world, vacations or just sight-seeing purpose.
