best way to learn trig (in my experience) is the unit circle.
Take a circle of radius one and then on any point a triangle is created with the x an y axis, x axis being the cos and the y axis being the sin of the angle of the hypotnuse to the x axis.
in this scenario, tan is just the sin over the cos (opposite over the adjacent)
the reason this works is because the radius is one. If you play with this circle for a while, you will understand triginometry, both in applications used in triangles but also in waves etc.
