It has variations. If a relative conjunction(if-then, etc.) is added before the noun and pronoun, it becomes were. Otherwise it is was.

it depends on how its uesd u know:was1st n 3rd pres.sing indic eg i was not there when the incident happened.were 2nd pres.past indic.eg if u were no full i would have eaten the cake.peace out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The past tense of the verb to be is I was not.
However in if clauses we can use If I were not...

It's 'I was not' .. I is the singular form, so 'was' is the singular form of the verb 'to be' ; 'were' is the plural so would usually go with they were, we were, you (more than one of you) were .. etc
