People believed in the Domino theory. It was thought that if communism were allowed to expand into southern Asia, that it would gain momentum and continue to spread. In short, if the US let Vietnam be the first domino knocked down by communism, pretty soon they'd all fall and all of Asia would be communist. From there, the communists could eventually take over the world.
