tends to happen to women who spend a lot of time around each other. don't know the medical terms but generally speaking there is a hormone in our bodies that "sync" up with other women who are around each other a lot. i had a friend with 3 sisters, all different ages and they'd get their periods on different days of the same week each month. talk about a lot of pads, tampons and bitchiness all in one place!

Well obviously it's not true across the board, but it does happen.

Several years ago, working in a department consisting almost entirely of women, we found that most of us were cycling at the same time. It wasn't a matter of coincidence -- for example, I had had longer cycles for my entire life, and they shifted and changed over a period of a few months until, lo and behold, I was on the same "schedule." That happened to a few women, and basically we all synced up with one particular woman's cycle. What made her pheromones the dominant ones, "controlling" the rest of us, well, who knows, right?

Menstrual synchronicity is a form of social regulation of ovulation, and has been observed in roommates, close friends, lesbian couples, and mothers and daughters (particularly that last category). It's not restricted to humans, and has also been noted in mice, hamsters, rats, and prosimian primates.

There are some interesting articles on it, and if you do a google search on menstrual synchronization you should find a lot of info.

It's got something to with with the hormone level... the strongest one, usually sets the pace for the others. So that's why we're always cranky around the same time!

It doesn't always happen, but hormonal release and moon phases influence cycles, so therefore, it could be close at times...
