I saw this documentary on History channel where the Mayans believed that their god Quetzalcoatl (i dont know how to spell that out) was coming back? Did they made that up? Even if they did then why did they make that up? Some say it was an alien who visited them and suddenly took them whith him (that may explain their sudden disapearance). I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this.

Its also interesting to know that they were really advanced in terms of astronomy and if you have ever went to see their pyramids in real life you can see drawings of UFO like figures.

It was part of the myth. Queztalcoatl (Feathered Serpent) was a great teacher and leader, not like Thoth of the Egyptians. He was tricked by another being into doing something unspeakable and because of the shame, he left in the year 1 Reed, leaving on a boat going east, saying that one day he would return.
The Spanish came in the year 1 Reed from the east in boats....
The Maya didn't disappear. This is a common belief. They did leave all their cities hundreds of years before the Spanish invaded, but it was due to some combination of warfare and drought, not being taken by aliens. There are still MILLIONS of people of Maya descent living in the same areas of Mexico and Guatemala and Belize. Some of them look like they've stepped right out of a wall painting, like they haven't got a drop of European blood (and they probably don't.)
(BTW, the Maya called Queztalcoatl "Kukulcan" --still means feathered serpent--and it was the Aztecs who thought the Spanish were Quetzalcoatl's minions.)

The Mayans, the Incas, the Aztecs, and the Christians all have the exact same stories. A man - a prophet that was expected - came to them and preached a new religion. Interestingly the philosophy/religion was almost identical in each case. When the prophet left they all left in similar manners. One walked across the water and disappeared. One ascended from a mountain top. And they all looked similar, which is why Cortes was not opposed when he started conquering. They were expecting a tall white man with a beard as their savior. (They had never seen a tall white man or any man with a beard except for their prophet and the Spaniards). All of this was written down which is why the good Christians destroyed all of the written material of all of the native people so that they could push their own version of a savior.

The plumed serpent is able to return once a year to climb the steps of an inner pyramid. A carving during the summer solstice lets light in so the figure climbs a staircase and rests on a podium before disappearing. For the sudden disappearance of the indigenous peoples. Europe brought the plague, murder, and mated them off into the community. Hence why Spaniards look and talk differently than Mexicans... As for the return of their Deity, I hope it happens and asks for some fresh sacrifices. It would be fun to watch an angered god decimate this country...

Apparently there's a legend that Quetzalcoatl could come back to them but in order for that to happen:

1. They'd have to find the correct summoning materia.

2. They'd have to equip it properly.

3. They'd need a lot of MP before they could use it.

(It can do alot of electrical type damage)!

For the same reason Christians believe that Jesus Christ is a god that is supposed to come back to them.
