Well it's just an easy expresion of suprise at something: as a substitute for a facial expression.

Must say I dont' find it nearly as annoying as the interminable LOL. Damn I even hate typing that *@€*^?§ acronym.

This kind of thing happens all the time with different words or phrases.I know that at the moment as soon as somebody sees something they like or appreciate they say WOW look at that or similar. Not sure where you are from but here in S.E/England a few years ago the word like was tacked on the end of every sentence.Example:It's hot today ain't it like. or I've been to the town like. Yes I had a good day like... It got a bit infuriating at times. Another word that gets used a lot is absolutely..When asked a question instead of just replying in the affirmative the reply is "Yes absolutely or just absolutely. You see and hear it quite often of people being interviewed on TV. These things go in cycles As one word or saying drops out another comes into fashion.

It is becoming one of those words and phrases that get over used. Others include my biggest hate is Basically, then on to, at the end of the day, absolutely, I know where you are coming from. The list is endless. They are used by people with limited vocabulary that cannot think of one intelligent word so they use all of these inappropriate words etc. The word basically is used almost as a punctuation mark to be put in at the beginning of all sentences.
