There's a design school (forget what it's called) and they have books that predict trends like 4-5 years in advanced.
before you ask I saw one of their old books that predicted last years trends and it was 98% right. i believe its in california, you can find it pretty easily my search for california design schools.

Fashion forecasting companies all over the world spend their time researching and photographing trends, colors and shapes in key locations (NYC, London, Paris, Tokyo). They look at "street fashion" as well as current designer collections, and try to put a finger on where it's all going. Movies and social events (Marie Antoinette, or the opening of a Paul Poiret retrospective at the Met) are also a big influence.
From these things they distil entire books full of information, around three seasons in advance. Designers pay for fashion forecasting services, unless they take the forecasting upon themselves - or just disregard the whole thing and go whichever way they choose.

The fashion industry and people like you - first there are designers who work with media to create buzz for symbolic names such as Versacci, DKNY, Vivuan Westwood etc... through their seasonal show, at the same time there are trend watchers WHO go to the places people hang out (key bars, restaurants, etc...) looking for what people are wearing and doing and then submitting new trends to designers and others in the industry to jump on the nest hot trend
