My therapist says I have a hard time with my "sense of self" and have "low ego strength" and I "let others project their stuff onto me." I am trying to understand what this means. Can anyone give me some insight or examples to help me understand this?

It means that you comply with the expectations other people have of you. This can be a often good thing...they may expect ethical behavior, for example. But it also can be a bad thing...they may expect you to accept all their lifestyle norms and attitudes. That's bad because if you did that, you would not be your true self, the person YOU need to be.

The idea is to become the person YOU need to be. Not the person everyone else wants you to be. Less comforming. More being true to yourself.

From my own experience and understanding it refers to you internalising the emotions and problems of others and taking them on as your own...instead of how you are really feeling which is important. It is great to help someone in need (as we all are one at some point in time) but it is also important to retain who you are and how u feel (sense of self)!

Yep that's why it is important to surround yourself with those who have a positive influence in your life!

It can be difficult to correct this as it can become a habit, but the easiest way is to recognise when it happens or when someone else has an affect on your mood...try to recognise this and change the response you have.

Good luck (**,)

Have you ever heard the phrase "misery loves company"? Well, that sort of says it all. People will tend to bring you down with them if you allow them to and you don't have a strong sense of self worth. Try to surround yourself with positive people who will be a good influence in your life. You have to decide that you are worthy of having a good life and having positive self esteem. Don't let others drag you down with them. Think and feel for yourself. You are worthy of a good life and your own emotions.

projection - is a defence mechanism, and is linked to personality hence the ''low ego strength''. defence mechanisms are coping strategies the ego uses to protects itself, we all use them and are perfectly normal :)
