had DSL, but not wireless. If I take my router over there, how can I use my laptop upstairs witht he router? There is no phonejack in my room so do I replace her DSL modem on her PC downstairs with the router and create a network, or should I use the DSL cable from the router to plug into the back of the DSL modem, and connect the router to the DSL modem. These are both SBC DSL products.
So, once again, take out DSL modem on her PC and replace with Wireless router, or Plug router into DSL modem and leave as is

Plug her DSL modem into your router and you're set. You don't have to move anything.

It's actually much simpler than you think. The only issue you will have is with the WAN side of your router. For most home users, you'll have a dynamic IP (your router gets its IP address from the DSL provider). I assume this is your situation (static IP would be much harder).

Your mom will have a modem or router from her DSL provider. It doesn't matter which. There will be an ethernet cord (one with 8 pins on the end, not the phone cord) running from that modem/router to her computer or home network.

You unplug that ethernet cord, and plug it in to the WAN side of your router, then plug her computer or home network into one of the ports on your router.

That's it. Your wireless router will provide you wireless without affecting her setup (assuming everything is dynamic, like 99% of home DSL). DHCP will reconfigure everything for you and, when you leave, will reconfigure everything back.

You will have to connect your router to the DSL and then configure your router to communicate with the DSL modem and then assuming your laptop has a wireless network card, you will have to configure your Laptop to connect to the router.
