As it is a Civil suit, not a criminal proceedings, the best you can hope for is being awarded monetary damages. However, first you have to prove the person said it, second you have to prove that it was untrue and with malicious intent and thirdly, you have to show that you were damaged in some way (like loss of a job). Even then, even if you win, what you have won is a Judgment, a piece of paper saying that party owes you money; if that party has no money or assets, there is nothing for you to get.

Suing for slander is in the form of a civil lawsuit. You seek to recover money damages and you can also seek to have the slanderous statement retracted.

Slander is a waste of time, and taxpayers money. It only makes trials take longer for people that have suffered real injuries.

Slander is incredibly difficult to prove. Libel (essentially, slander in printed form) is easier to prove, but I believe there are just fines, no jail time.

Slander is a form of defamation and is pursued civilly. If you prevail as you suggest in your question, your possible remedies would be monetary or an apology.
