There are 10 books total on the shelf. Of those, 5 are either a biography or a reference book. Therefore, your odds are 5 out of 10, which reduces to 1/2, that that is what was selected.

Total books = 4+3+1+2 = 10

Number of biograghy or reference books = 3 + 2 = 5

Chance of biography or reference book = 5/10 = 1/2

there are 10 books in total on the bookshelf....
there are 3 biography books and 2 reference books...
combining the number of biography books and reference books and you get 5 books........
5 out of 10 is.........1/2

therefore 1/2 is your answer....

it is 3(BIO) + 2(REF) = 5/ 10(4+3+2+1 total no of books) = 1/2
