My husband got a virus on our computer and he went to Wal Mart and bought the Defender Pro anti spam CD and went home and tried to install it w/out reading the instructions (MEN!) well, it says you are supposed to uninstall any other anti spam software you may have on your PC first, which he did NOT do. Now the computer is running really slow and I am trying to get to the part where I can uninstall all anti spam software and start over with the new one, but it won't get there before completly shutting down. Is it ruined or is there something else I can try?

Ok, I have restarted in safe mode and I am in add/remove programs and when I try to remove any program, I get a message saying "The windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance". NOW WHAT?

Right okay, you need to reinstall windows.. firstly you need to make sure you have all the drivers for the sound card, grafix, and many more..

if you dont them im sure you can download them..

Well you need to stat up, but have the Windows Boot Disk in, and then go to format hardrive, and then reinstall windows.

Any data that you have and that you want to keep, i would recommend that you backthis all up on a pendrive firsty. then do the reformat of the hardrive, then reinstall windows XP!

All the best.

Try this: I don't know if you have Windows XP but try using the System Restore Feature of XP. From the many times I've used it I've never lost any data, and it only reconfigures your installed programs from their state on a given date.

As others advised, go into safe mode by pressing F8 at boot up. Once Windows loads, click Yes to load the system restore. Click a date before you were infected by the virus, but not too far back where you remove other programs you need. This hopefully will fix your spyware issue and your virus infections at the same time.

I suggest you also look into Norton Antivirus software. Also go to spybot.com and install Spybot (free).

Hope this helps!

Cold boot the computer (turn it on when it's off), at the Windows startup hit F8 and choose to boot into Safe Mode. This is the easiest way to boot to a state that will allow you to remove the anti-spam programs.
