To win a championship in F1, you ultimately need a top driver to go with a front running car, and a team that is working well together. Ferrari felt the second two were in order, but the first was going to be a major concern if Michael Schumacher left.
So, looking back a little ways, you had an F1 grid where there was Michael Schumacher, and two other drivers that could be considered as front runners: Kimi and Fernando. I suspect that behind closed doors, both were talked about as possible replacements.
There was nothing ever specifically said that I recall, but from what wasn't said or how things were said, I always had the impression that the Ferrari brain trust had concerns about Alonso. This may have been due to the fact that he was a rival while at Renault, or something else. Further, going back to a time when nothing was settled, Fernando was with a great team in a very competitive car at Renault - probably a difficult sell to think you could lure him away. Kimi was in a fast car, but one that was almost sure to blow up by the closing laps of the race. This was certainly causing some drama at Mclaren, and would make Kimi a more likely target!
Of course, in the end, before any of this would come into play, Fernando signed to join Mclaren long before Ferrari went looking to get everything sorted out. So he was never an option... so in direct answer, they didn't sign Alonso for the same reason they didn't sign Fangio or Senna or Prost. None of them were available!
I am not sure why you don't think Kimi is talented enough. He led more laps than Alonso in 2005. He's shown great race pace his entire career. And he's started off the season in the best possible fashion! It's a long year to go, and Alonso will certainly be a competitive factor, but in the end I think both Mclaren and Ferrari got the drivers they really wanted. Now we just have to see how it works out.

McLaren signed Alonso before they knew if Schumacher would retire. Schumacher had a clause in his contract that allows him to make the final decision on who the number 2 driver is and there was no way he was going to allow Alonso on the team while he was there. Not to mention that Jean Todt was always keen to hire Kimi, so when they knew that Schumacher was going to leave, they grabbed Kimi to fill the spot. And I don't know why you think Kimi is not talented enough. When McLaren still had a good car 4 years ago, it was Kimi who showed the first signs of being Schumachers eventual rival. However, since the car repeatedly failed him; Alonso naturally took over as rival in the ever reliable Renault. Kimi is a Ferrari driver now, and I fully support him as any good tifosi would.

If you say that Kimi is not good and talented enough then you dont know Kimi, he is really a talented driver and mature kinda person, Ferrari has taken a good decision by taking him into the team.
Alonso is also a good driver, Because of his earlier commitment with Mclaren, he was not considered by the Ferrari's and also he had some conflicts with the Reds in the last season....let him be the rival itself.....NMN

Ferrari would have signed Alonso, but Jean Todt and Luca di Montezomolo already had their eyes set on Kimi - even when he was driving for Sauber. They envisioned him to be Schumacher's replacement and only signed Massa as insurance. It was even rumored that Schumacher was "forced" to retire from F1 when Ferrari began their "secret" talks with Raikkonen. Kimi definitely has the talent; his commitment and motivation is what's questionable.

Because Alonso is a whiner and would not be able to join Ferrari as an effective team member after bad-mouthing them all last season.
As talented as Fernando is, I think Kimi is equally as fast, and will mature at Ferrari.

Didn't Alonso sign with McClaren before last season started? If so, that would have made him unavailable once the Schumacher's seat opened up at Ferrari.
Am I crazy or does anyone else remember it this way?
