it was on last night quite late on ITV 4.

The original from hbo films? (I think they just remade it too.)
A young dude drives across country, gets tired, so picks up a hitcher to help him keep awake. Too bad, cuz this guy proceeds to act crazy enough to get kicked out, then proceeds to murder a bunch of people along the way who the young guy interacts with. The bad guy kinda keeps up with him by hitching with others. Our hero kills mr. naughty in the end.
Great psychological thriller, the original with rutger hauer as the baddie!

Teenage couple pick up a hitch hiker, he is one psycho killer, Rutgar Hayer is the hitcher, think the couple is played by Thomas C Howell and oh cant remember her name but she was the psycho in the film where Bridget Fonda wanted a flat mate

this dude is delivering a new car by driving from texas to california (i think) he is having trouble staying awake as the drive through texas is long and boring (all desert, not many buildings) sees someone hitchhiking in the middle of nowhere. then the rest is just a freakshow. rutger hauer just totally messes with his mind and is on a killing spree. then actually has the cops believing the kid is the serial killer
awesome movie definitely worth watching

It's a rather pointless film where a cute man picks up Rutger Hauer, who turns out to be a homicidal maniac.
It's still fun to watch though, and the ending is a bit shocking.

I've only seen the original where a kid picks up a hitchhiker but kinda regrets it by the end of the film.

it is a wicked film starring rutger hauer as a lunatic hitchiker who terrorises a young bloke.jennifer jason leigh also stars and her demise is quite shocking.the hitchiker just wants to die and he plays a game with the bloke trying to encourage him to kill him.
