Sure, I think many would. Not every American is a Christian, but I think the number of Americans who would not vote for such a candidate would be greater.

Why wouldn't they?

They'd be voting for a politician... a governer... a preseident... a man who makes decisions.

Not a preacher.

The more religion gets involved with politics, the worse it will be for all of us... Just look at how Afghanistan turned out... They had a religious based system of government (The Taliban) and it not only doomed thier country to the dark ages, but bred some of the worlds most hateful extremists...

Would you really want to live in a country like that?

Why does the religious belief of a candidate even come into the equation? The qualifications of a candidate should be the first and only basis for electing or voting for them!

Religion is a PRIVATE part of your life.

This country has a separation of church and state and it should stay that way.

I guess so, although I guess that goes to show how much the political landscape has changed, as the majority of Republicans used to be extremely conservative. My whole family still is and would never vote for a non-Christian candidate.

I would. I'm a Republican but not a Christian. In fact I know quite a few atheists that are Republicans and we don't let someone's religious affiliation dictate who we vote for.

The people in Minneapolis elected a Muslim to Congress. Many atheists have probably been elected -- we just don't know whether someone really believes.

Last, but not least, what about all the Jews that have been elected to public office?

I would. Jesus Christ has no place in the Oval Office. He wasn't an American.

So I guess that makes you an anti-Semite? Watch out, Joe Lieberman and Henry Kissinger!

Incidentally, there's a HUGE difference between a candidate who openly and publicly espouses their faith, and one that actually practices it. Compare the teachings of Christ and see how Bush applies them, and you'll see that Dubya is far from being a true Christian.

They elected Bush and he attended an Islamic religious service right after Sep 11...

There are a lot of Republicans in office, so yes it has been proven that Americans would vote for such a candidate.
