When i was a wee nipper in junior school, about 1987ish i remember i used to read loads of science fiction books, and one of the books i read involved a girl (i think) who visits a strange planet and there where lots of flying saucers disguised as hats. Now i know after reading this question you'll all probably think I’m insane but I’ve been adamant that this book exists, please someone prove my right, and I’d be over the moon if you could get me a title and an author for this book.

Thanks.

Sounds like an insane story. Can't think of what book you are wondering about though.

I don't know the book you are looking for but you might like an SF story about disguised hats I wrote for a competition. It had to be no more than 100 words so I had to do a lot of pruning.

HAT TALE

We had watched the hat feed, dissolving and ingesting the arm from the organ bank. Admired its fatal beauty now quiescent in its cage. This unsuspected predator had co-evolved with humans for millions of years. Who noticed a hat when someone disappeared.

The hats became too successful. Humans finally started building for permanence as their numbers dropped. Today we enjoy their transport and communications systems, autovets and homes. They are all gone.

Mankind was wrecking our world but nevertheless we gave them a clue. They should have wondered why we cats fought so desperately against wearing hats.
