War is a reflection of individual human nature and human group behaviour.
War is the one constant in human society that links our history from the beginning of time. The study of history, it has been said, is the study of war.
War is about greed and politics and dogma and understanding the negative aspects of these behaviours is important. War is about bullies and victims.
War speaks to the very essence of humanity, and through studying war, it tells us a lot about the past present and future of humanity. It tells a lot about what a nasty bunch of creatures we can be when we really want to.
It has also been said that those who don't study history are doomed to repeat it. Not entirely true since there are many people who study war as a means of waging more succesful wars.
The Cold War, like all other wars, was destructive and created unneccesary suffering on all sides. There are many good sites on the Cold War, and thousands of books. I would recommend Wikipedia as a great place to start.

So that we don't repeat past mistakes. History is not only about wars though. I am afraid that I have seen history repeated too many times in my life in too many countries. I have lived for the last few years and am living through some really dramatic history in the making. History is valuable to know, it is certainly interesting, but we must never forget that it is often about how times and circumstances march over flesh and blood human beings. It is filled with with suffering.

One good reason why it is important for students and others in society to learn about the history of wars (military history) is that war has affected, is affecting now, or will affect, nearly every society in some way.

Well, people will tell you it is important so that you can learn from your mistakes... however, it seems that just does not seem to work as leaders seem to like to make wars.. hopefully not for most of us, but human nature -
