65 teams make the NCAA tournament. 30 teams get automatic bids for winning their conference tournament, 1 team from the Ivy league gets in for winning the regular season (they have no conference tournament, this year it was Penn), and then you have 34 at large bids. The magic number is 65.

The NCAA Tournament officially has 65 teams. The "play-in" seed for the #16 seed isn't actually a "play-in" because the two teams are officially in the tournament.
You also have the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) that is part of the NCAA, but is not THE championship tournament. 40 teams are invited to that tournament and it is considered a secondary post-season tournament for the NCAA.

The NCAA basketball tournament has a 64 team bracket each year. There are 65 teams who qualify - the 64th and 65th ranked teams play in a "play-in" game, where the loser goes home and the winner plays the #1 seed in the tourney. Since you used the plural I will add that the other Men's BB tourney, the NIT, has 32 teams in it.

64 teams go to the NCAA tournament. There is a play in game for the 64th team (which I believe is pretty lame.) The NCAA committee should know who the top 64 teams are based on automatic bids, team (season) records (wins and losses), and strength of schedule.

well there are two post-season tournaments. 65 go to the NCAA and 32 go to the NIT.
