If a person's ego puts others off, should he/she just give it up. Is it necessary that we have to reciprocate to people who think we're "over-inteligent" by cutting ourselves down? Should a person fall prey to others' nagging when they nag for reasons unknown? (Very generalised, doesn't involve me)

each to his own. there's no one in the entire universe who doesnot have a weakness. egoism can be one of them.
i dont think that a person should always be trying to improve his weaknesses. sometimes one should "strengthen our strengths" as well.
why should one change one's own self for someone else.
a person who likes someone genuinely, likes him or her as they are. There's no sure way to success but there's a sure way to failure and that is trying to impress everyone.

I hope I understood your qeustion enough, so here's my 2 cents: I consider my self an intelligent person, and at times I will get people who tell others that "she thinks she is so smart" or "she thinks she's better then us". When I actually don't. I got all this attention because I became an activist in my community with corrupt politics. Whenever you state your opinion or do something intelligent there are many who will harp on you and it is because there are many people who are not gifted with intelligence. I don't want to sound mean, but I have 3 kids who are so book smart and great thinkers, and I have 1 child who just can't grasp academics like the others. She is more sporty, into nature, and into people/relationships, which is beautiful. You just have to accept that people will always envy what they do not have (or the energy to achieve it).

I would not down my intelligence ever to make another person feel good. If I have not disrespected them then all is well. My hunny is a power nagger, and I tell him, "ok, I get it. You are upset. Can you please stop now?" I always make sure to watch my tone because one can sound arrogant or "above" another with voice tone. If he does not stop nagging then I walk into a room and tell him I need to be alone to regain my zen, hehe. Sorry if I went off in a completely diff direction!

Ego is one of the most abused and misunderstood word in the lexicon. Hey! without ego you are no better than an animal, it is ego that drives you to do whatever you do. But when it infringes on other's feelings is when ego would be bad. So it is this cheap small ego that is the cause of worry. Instead, dont kill your ego, expand it to such an extent it encompasses the whole world - you develop a sense of belonging with everyone and everything and since they are seen as part of yourself, your ego doesnt damage them in any manner.
But cutting yourselves down = pampering someone else's ego. This is not a wise thing to do. If it is not win-win, it is better you win and the others lose ;-) Atleast you can raise them to your level gradually. If you have lost, then you have no control over the eventualities (you can't bank on the winner unless it is you, to be compassionate).
