i cant get mike working, it was working on an add on sound card but cant get it working on onboard soundcard, the add on card has gone so no conflict there. i am experienced in rebuilding computers but have never had this problem. i have tried everything that you would normally try but still no joy. i really need a proper pc expert to answer this with a technical suggestion beyond the basic stuff. maybe bios related , please help thx

When my microphone wouldn't work, I eventually found that it was set to use a front panel jack - even though that wasn't actually connected!

right click on the "volume" icon in the taskbar
select "Open volume control"
options, properties - check "Microphone" - OK
options, advanced controls...
click on the microphone's advanced button
make sure that 'Front panel microphone' is unchecked. Close.

it might be dependent on your microphone. if it's a normal, standard pc mic for just general chit chat with ur pc then make sure that your soundcard (if it's onboard presumable ac97 chipset) is update with correct drivers. always make sure that it's unmuted and wave volume settings are also unmuted. goto your soundcard settings and check in the properties that an input function is actually active.
if however you have a decent mic, for recording purposes, you may have found that your old soundcard had a preamp function, in which it raised the gain level of the microphone. if the microphone does require pre-amplication, you won't hear it on an onboard soundcard probably.

Even the best of us can miss this, have you checked in the mixer, to see if the mike mute is checked?
