Grab your hard drive and stick it in someone else's computer and see if you can read it.
When you format your hard drive, windows seems to tweak things a little specific to your system, so it very well may not work in another puter depending on it's specs. I'm not perfectly sure what goes on there, but if you both used ntfs, the typical system today, maybe it'll go. Try a few. If that doesn't work, it sound like your drive is likely the problem.
Just my 2 cents, from having played with and built a couple.

What kind of pc do you have? Many have a built in recovery program, or at least let you create restore disc's when you first purchased it? Try starting in safe mode and look for pc recovery options?

not sure what version of windows you have but if you have the windows 2k or xp disk you can do a repair. This could fix your problem. If you can't fix it you could install the os to another directory on your c drive all your data files will still be there but your apps will not work.

Well, when I have odd problems with my laptop, I call the Geek Squad or whatever it's called from Best Buy. And they come in like 5 minutes and fix it... So you can call them, but if you're rly good with computers then I guess just fix it yourself? x_x
