Well I saw that little girl after the American bombings in Vietnam & many more like it & this will stay in my my mind forever.
Look what has happended to some of this countries best war correspondents & troops because the American cowboys are trigger happy.
The sad thing is that we are seeing the same horrors happening to the poor children, women & men in Iraq so many years later, just over greed for oil.
Look what happens in Dafur & Zimbabwe & nothing will happen about the tragic things happening in those countries.
Do you remember seeing two Palestinian boys being marched up a mountain by Israeli troops then being beaten & their limbs broken with rocks.
That sickened me.
For years Macdonalds & Noraid from the US were pouring money into the IRA to bomb the UK, killing & maiming our citizens.
Are they inhuman
The Americans & us British have a lot to answer for.

I suppose we're all getting a bit desensitised to images of violence and destruction. Everyday we're being exposed to images from news coverage of conflicts that are way more graphic than what was generally seen during the Vietnam War.
We have more news correspondents with camera teams embedded with military units in action, and more of these images are more readily available via the internet, 24 hour news coverage and news print. The nett effect of all of that is that the image of a girl running in fear after being burnt in a napalm attack doesn't shock us as much - not when images of mutilated bodies strewn in the aftermath of a Baghdad car bomb gets aired on the news every other night of the week.
There is also the effect of the glorification of violence in films and games.

I tend to agree with you. We are getting much more explicit photographs in the press and TV, and protect ourselves by reacting less than we used to. I hope we are not becoming dehumanised , but our inability to do anything about a situation somehow makes a difference. Essentially its a cop-out, we think we cannot change anything so we do not even try.
We should do all we can to pressurise governments to think differently and to try alternatives to violence, as violence always seems to breed violence. (cf. situation in Iraq etc).
But when you have people who glorify in violence as in Darfur and other African situations I just don't know what to do or think.
We can and should support the major charities ( Oxfam and Save the Children etc) who do their best to help those who are unable to help themselves.
Action is on the whole better than emotion.

Maybe we are but there are so many disaster stories from all over the world it would be very draining to get upset by all of them. Also most of the graphic images are sensored so that we are not so badly affected.
As sad as it is we must just get used to hearing bad news.

If you hide your remote control and put the news channel on all day without adverts - I think that you will be de-toxed and want to do more about society in general. The remote gives us access to choice of watching and therefore we can turn over at will and feel dehumanised.

Yes, I think the T.V. contributes in a big way to making people devoid of emotions you would easily expect in a person about 10-15 years ago.

I'm with you. they show it all so much it no longer has impact.its become easier over the years for the cameras to get everywhere and we have 24 hour news casts. i think it doesn't help the law do its job either. we find people guilty of all sorts before they even get to trial.

Yes and the main reason there is so much violence in the world today....Why no one can understand this is always puzzling to me...
Too much exposure to things we once would never see... leading a sheltered life is good, it leads to giving others shelter...
