When i first started playing ball, my first coach told me when facing up on a player, dont look at the ball, or his eyes, but his stomach. Whenever he goes to move, his stomach will twitch in that direction. Always helps me get the first step. Good luck. Also, watch videos of guys like Bruce Bowen, Raja Bell, Ron Artest, etc.

Here's a big tip - Don't look at the NBA players, most don't play effective defense. If you want to know how to play defense look at some good college players.

Also don't ever go for head fakes and don't worry about the other guy getting flashy with the ball. Stay on the ground at all times. Don't foul a jump-shooter.

Exercise like crazy and get your legs into 'game-shape'. The best defenders are the ones in great shape.

Spread your legs out so they're beyond your shoulders. Work on lateral quickness. If the offensive player shows the ball, make a go for it, but don't compromise your position in the process. It's all about staying in front of your man.

get in the wide defensive stance. with ur hands out defending the pass

as a player moves with the ball ur feet should be sliding. so if ur feet are apart, u bring ur left leg to ur right leg, then step out with your right leg. sliding ur feet in such a manner will help u stay with ur defender even if they try and cross u over.

it works, but u gotta work on it. sliding the feet is a must if u wanna stick with ur man. keep ur hands off the ball and u can cause them to dribble off their foot or throw a poor pass.

remember....slide the feet

always see man and ball. push your opponent to their weak hand on the dribble, work on your defense slides and don't reach in too much....there's tons of things you can do but thats a few good starts....good luck!
