That polar bear still has a chance of having a long and happy life. I don't if any one has watched that animal planet show GROWING UP....but they do a show on an orphaned polar bear cub who's mother and brother were killed by poachers. The polar bear did live at a zoo but was never domesticated by humans. He in fact had little contact with people and displayed all natural behaviors he would in the wild.

back in the 80s when I was first interested in wildlife rehabilitation, there was a large segment of the population who thought it was wrong. Rehabilitating an animal meant that you were not "letting nature take it's course" and were then going to re-introduce an animal back into the environment that otherwise would have been taken out of it. Whereas I could see their point of view, I also realised that if it weren't for humans, most of the animals I was rehabilitating wouldn't be in the situation they are in (car hits, abandonment, shooting, power line hits, etc)
there is also the case of the California Condor. This species was naturally going extinct. It's natural prey population was disappearing and was down to only a handful of birds. All wild birds were taken into captivity and force bred (taking eggs away as soon as they are laid to provoke more egg laying) to increase the number of birds. Then they were released back into the wild, but have to be supliment fed to make sure they get the necessary nutrients.
The case of the polar bear cub is sort of in between. Would the mother have abandoned the cub if it were out in the wild? Probably not, unless there was something physically wrong with the cub.
Is it an endangered species that needs every possible individual for genetic diverity? no (well, it's not as endangered as some).
Should everything be done to save a living creature, even though it would be very long, time consuming, and ultimately may be hopeless? That is for the zoo itself to judge as they will be the ones ponying up the time and money.

I couldn't believe it when I read that story. I believe in saving any animal when possible. That cute little thing is doing just fine in the zoo. I think it would be inhumane to kill a perfectly healthy animal, because they should have let nature take it's course.
Why do humans have adoption? If the mother doesn't want it, we should kill it? Right? I know there is a difference between humans and animals, but I agree their argument is just plain stupid. That little bear deserves life.

I KNOW!!!!!!!!!! it's insane. after the damage humans have done, we have to do everything we can to make things right whenever possible. if a woman dies in childbirth or can't breast feed for whatever reason, we don't let the babies die. we find alternative methods. there's a guy, i think in NH, that takes in orphan cubs. raises them in an isolated area, wears a non-human looking suit and when they're old enough teaches them how to survive naturally. very high success rate.

Well, someone needs to teach those Polar Bears a lesson. If they do kill the baby bear they should televise it worldwide so that all Polar bears get the message that humans aren't to be eaten! That would certainly put enough fear in them to stop their evil doings.

i think every creature deserves the chance at life and that activist group should be ashamed of themselves for even thinking about killing that little cub
