You left some in the machine, there may be a sock or two wrapped up or stuck in some pants or shirts that you're not aware of, especially sheets or mattress pads. I did this one time when washing some bleachables. I had a matresspad, a couple of undershirts, socks and underwear in the wash and when they were all done I was missing a few items. They were stuck in the mattresspad by the corners.

Put your socks in a small laundry bag (usually used for delicates) so you don't lose them.

Washing machines cause socks to reproduce and make new socks. Seriously, by some "sock locks". They're plastic rings you put on a pair of socks to keep the pair together.

Many times it is stuck in a pant leg or a shirt sleeve. You have have dropped it on the way to the washing machine or it fell out while you were putting clothes into the dryer. Lots of times it was lost before it even hit the hamper. Your dog or cat may have taken off with it also.

i then you keep the odd sock for the next time you do laundry, hoping to have a new ful pair of socks. and of course then your missing a whole pair not just one sock!!! My parents always said that there was a sock goblin that lived in all garages, and he stole the socks. for the longest time i believed them, and it might hold some truth

OMG, I am still trying to figure that one out. As I'm usually the one doing the laundry at home, it's always been an irritation both to me and the other owners of various socks.

YES and I HATE that! It happens to other small items I put in there too. I bought a few mesh bags to put socks and lingerie in and I haven't lost a thing since then. You can get them at any major store. They are by the ironing boards.

Sock conspiracy.... the aliens abduct only one sock and leave the other to be utterly confused.... did you check in your fridge for the second one?? I liked the kid show, Arthur's story about the "Sock Market".

I use to do that until I started penning them together when I threw them in the dirty clothes or I tie them togerther with plastic ties and then they are already paired together
